About Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Portrait of Caroline Rémy (1885)
Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841–1919) made this pastel around 1885. In the mid-1880s Renoir felt he had taken Impressionism as far as it could go. Inspired by classical art and by Ingres, he adopted firmer outlines and smoother surfaces, a phase often called his 'dry' or Ingres period, which culminated in The Large Bathers of 1884–1887. It is drawn in pastel and measures about 62.3 x 50.8 cm. It is held in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
