About Michelangelo and Study for the Facade of San Lorenzo (1516)
This architectural drawing by a pupil of Michelangelo (1475–1564) dates from around 1516. In 1516 Pope Leo X, a Medici, asked Michelangelo to design a marble façade for the family church of San Lorenzo in Florence. Michelangelo spent years drawing plans and quarrying marble at Carrara and Pietrasanta and made a large wooden model, but the contract was cancelled in 1520 and the façade remains bare brick to this day. It is in the Casa Buonarroti in Florence.
