About Raphael and Terranuova Madonna (1505)

Raphael (1483–1520) painted the Terranuova Madonna around 1505, at the start of his Florentine period. It is named after the Duke of Terranuova, from whose collection it was acquired. It was his first attempt at the tondo, the circular format popular in Florence, and it is the largest of the five Raphael Madonnas in the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin. The composition grew out of an earlier pen drawing that also included Saint Joseph and an angel, which Raphael dropped to open up the landscape. Painted in oil on poplar, the tondo measures about 88 cm across.
