About Raphael and The Madonna of Loreto (1509)
Raphael (1483–1520) painted this work around 1509–1510, early in his years in Rome, for the church of Santa Maria del Popolo, where it hung beside his portrait of Pope Julius II. For centuries the original was thought to be lost, until in 1979 the version at Chantilly was recognised as Raphael's own. Painted in oil on panel and measuring about 120 x 90 cm, it is held in the Musée Condé at the Château de Chantilly.
