About Rembrandt van Rijn and The Conspiracy of the Batavians under Claudius Civilis (1661)
Rembrandt van Rijn (1606–1669) painted this work in 1661–1662 for the new Town Hall of Amsterdam. The story, told by the Roman historian Tacitus, describes the Batavians — ancestors of the Dutch — swearing to rise against Rome. The painting was returned to the artist soon after installation, and Rembrandt cut it down to this central section. Painted in oil on canvas and measuring about 196 x 309 cm, it belongs to the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts and is displayed at the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm.
