About Rembrandt van Rijn and The Unconscious Patient (Allegory of Smell) (1624)

Rembrandt van Rijn (1606–1669) painted this work around 1624. Rembrandt was born in Leiden in 1606 and trained there and, briefly, in Amsterdam with the history painter Pieter Lastman. Back in Leiden in the late 1620s he worked side by side with his friend Jan Lievens, painting small, dramatically lit biblical scenes and tronies — studies of heads in costume — that soon caught the eye of Constantijn Huygens, secretary to the Prince of Orange. It is painted in oil on panel and measures about 31.8 x 25.4 cm. It is held in The Leiden Collection in New York.
