About Vincent van Gogh and Man Polishing a Boot (1882)
Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) made this drawing in 1882. In The Hague, between 1881 and 1883, Van Gogh taught himself to draw by studying ordinary working people — orphans, labourers, fishermen and the poor — in pencil, chalk and watercolour, and received his first painting lessons from his cousin by marriage, Anton Mauve. It is executed in graphite and measures about 48.9 x 28 cm.
