About Vincent van Gogh and Tree Roots in a Sandy Ground (1882)
Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) made this watercolour in April 1882. In The Hague, between 1881 and 1883, Van Gogh taught himself to draw by studying ordinary working people — orphans, labourers, fishermen and the poor — in pencil, chalk and watercolour, and received his first painting lessons from his cousin by marriage, Anton Mauve. It is executed in watercolour.
