About After Leonardo da Vinci and Fourth Knot (1490)
This work, made after a design by Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519), dates from around 1490–1500. Leonardo designed a celebrated series of intricate interlaced 'knot' patterns, engraved around 1490–1500 and inscribed with the words Academia Leonardi Vinci. The designs circulated widely in the Renaissance and were copied by Albrecht Dürer as woodcuts, and they remain some of the most hypnotic ornamental images of the period. It is an engraving.
