About Caravaggio and Medusa (1597)
Caravaggio (1571–1610) painted Medusa around 1597–1598 on canvas stretched over a convex wooden shield. Cardinal Francesco Maria del Monte presented it to Ferdinando I de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, and it was kept in the Medici armoury in Florence. Caravaggio is said to have used his own face as the model. It measures about 60 x 55 cm and is in the Uffizi Galleries in Florence.
