About Caravaggio and Saint John the Baptist (Youth with a Ram) (1602)

Caravaggio (1571–1610) painted this work in 1602 for the Roman nobleman Ciriaco Mattei, in whose palace he was living at the time. Its unusual imagery, a cheerful nude youth with a ram instead of the Baptist's usual lamb, has made it one of his most debated paintings. Painted in oil on canvas and measuring about 129 x 95 cm, it is in the Capitoline Museums in Rome.
