About Caravaggio and Sleeping Cupid (1595)
This Sleeping Cupid is catalogued as an early work by Caravaggio (1571–1610), painted in Rome around 1595–1596; he returned to the same subject in Malta in 1608 in a painting now in Florence. The sleeping god of love was a popular theme at the time, symbolising love at rest and passions held in check. Painted in oil on canvas and measuring about 65 x 105 cm, it is in the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields.
