About Edvard Munch and Alma Mater (The Researchers) (1911)
Edvard Munch (1863–1944) painted this picture in 1911. After returning to Norway in 1909 Munch settled on the coast at Kragerø and later Hvitsten, painting monumental scenes of workers, horses and snowy landscapes in bright, energetic colour. Between 1909 and 1916 he also created the huge murals for the Aula of the University of Oslo, celebrating knowledge and the sun. It is a monumental version of Alma Mater, one of the main motifs Munch designed for the University Aula, in which a mother nursing her baby sits on the shore while children explore the world around her. It measures about 480 x 1100 cm. It is in the Munch Museum in Oslo.
