About Hubert and Jan van Eyck and Ghent Altarpiece: The Hermits (1432)

This work is part of the Ghent Altarpiece by Hubert van Eyck (died 1426) and Jan van Eyck (c. 1390–1441). This panel stands on the lower right wing of the open altarpiece. The Ghent Altarpiece, also known as the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, was completed in 1432 for the chapel of Joos Vijd and Elisabeth Borluut in the church now known as St Bavo's Cathedral in Ghent. An inscription on its frame says it was begun by Hubert van Eyck and finished by his brother Jan. Painted in oil with astonishing precision, its twelve panels are among the founding masterpieces of European art. The altarpiece is still in St Bavo's Cathedral in Ghent, where a major restoration begun in 2012 has removed centuries of overpaint.
