About Leonardo da Vinci and A Deluge (1517)

Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519) made a series of about ten deluge drawings around 1517–1518, in the last years of his life, and wrote long passages describing storms that overwhelm landscapes, cities and people. They were in principle studies for his never-finished Treatise on Painting, but many see them as a personal meditation on the impermanence of all things. This sheet, in black chalk, pen and ink with wash and measuring about 16.2 x 20.3 cm, came through Francesco Melzi and Pompeo Leoni to the Earl of Arundel and entered the Royal Collection by 1690.
