About Leonardo da Vinci and A Ravine (1482)

Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519) made this work around 1482. Leonardo was one of the first European artists to treat landscape as a subject in its own right. His drawings of mountains, rocks, trees and weather reflect a lifelong curiosity about geology, light and atmosphere. It is drawn in pen and ink and measures about 22 x 15.8 cm. Like Leonardo's other drawings at Windsor, it passed after his death to his pupil Francesco Melzi, then to the sculptor Pompeo Leoni and to Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel, before entering the Royal Collection by around 1690.
