About Leonardo da Vinci and A Sprig of Guilder-rose (1506)

Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519) made this work around 1506–1512. In the years after 1505 Leonardo made a series of exquisite plant studies, many in red chalk, partly as research for his lost painting of Leda and the Swan. They combine a botanist's accuracy with an artist's feeling for rhythm and growth. It is drawn in red chalk and measures about 14.4 x 14.3 cm. Like Leonardo's other drawings at Windsor, it passed after his death to his pupil Francesco Melzi, then to the sculptor Pompeo Leoni and to Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel, before entering the Royal Collection by around 1690.
