About Leonardo da Vinci and A Study of a Woman's Hands (1490)

Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519) made this drawing around 1490 in charcoal and metalpoint with white highlights on pale pinkish prepared paper, measuring about 21.5 x 15 cm. It has often been linked to his portrait of Ginevra de' Benci, which was cut down and probably once showed her hands, but its style points to around 1490 and it may instead be an early study for Lady with an Ermine, before the ermine was introduced. After Leonardo's death the sheet passed to his pupil Francesco Melzi, then to the sculptor Pompeo Leoni and to Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel. It entered the Royal Collection by 1690, where it remains today.
