Ginevra de' Benci Poster by Leonardo da Vinci — Authentic Ginevra de' Benci Art Print for Modern and Traditional Interiors

Ginevra was the daughter of a wealthy Florentine banker, and her portrait was probably painted around the time of her marriage at sixteen, when Leonardo himself was only about six years older. It is one of his first experiments with oil paint, and you can already see his new naturalism: her face is modelled with layers of smoky shadow rather than hard outlines. The spiky juniper — ginepro in Italian — is a clever play on her name. This Ginevra de' Benci art print reproduces her porcelain skin, golden curls and hazy landscape beautifully.

About Leonardo da Vinci and Ginevra de' Benci (1474)

Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519) painted Ginevra de' Benci around 1474–1478, some thirty years before the Mona Lisa. The oil on panel measures about 38 x 37 cm and was cut down at the bottom at some point, probably removing the sitter's hands. The back of the panel carries her emblem: a wreath of laurel and palm around a sprig of juniper with the motto Virtutem Forma Decorat. The portrait belonged to the Princes of Liechtenstein for more than two centuries — for a time even catalogued as a work by Lucas Cranach — before it was acquired in 1967 by the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. It remains the only painting by Leonardo in the Americas.
