About Leonardo da Vinci and Studies of Water II (1510)
Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519) made this work around 1510–1512. Water fascinated Leonardo throughout his life. He studied its currents, eddies and waves for engineering projects on the river Arno and for a planned treatise on the subject, filling sheet after sheet with observations that are as beautiful as they are precise. It is drawn in red chalk and measures about 20.5 x 20.3 cm. Like Leonardo's other drawings at Windsor, it passed after his death to his pupil Francesco Melzi, then to the sculptor Pompeo Leoni and to Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel, before entering the Royal Collection by around 1690.
