About Leonardo da Vinci and The Drapery of a Sleeve (1504)
Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519) made this work around 1504. Leonardo often studied drapery on its own, arranging cloth over small models to observe exactly how light falls across every fold. These studies fed directly into the figures of his paintings and are admired today as works of art in their own right. It is drawn in red chalk and measures about 22 x 13.9 cm. Like Leonardo's other drawings at Windsor, it passed after his death to his pupil Francesco Melzi, then to the sculptor Pompeo Leoni and to Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel, before entering the Royal Collection by around 1690.
