Leonardo da Vinci The Fetus in the Womb Poster 1511 Wall Art Painting

The Fetus in the Womb Poster — perhaps the best-known of all Leonardo da Vinci's anatomical drawings — a child curled inside the opened womb, drawn in warm red chalk with Leonardo's famous mirror-writing notes.

The Fetus in the Womb Poster by Leonardo da Vinci — Authentic The Fetus in the Womb Art Print for Modern and Traditional Interiors

Colour is rare in Leonardo's anatomy sheets, but here he used red chalk and dense curved hatching to express the coiled potential of new life. Around the main image are smaller sketches of the membranes unfolding like petals, a diagram about binocular vision and notes on painting. It is equal parts science and poetry. This The Fetus in the Womb art print is a striking choice for a study, a doctor's office, a nursery corner or a science-lover's gallery wall.

About Leonardo da Vinci and The Fetus in the Womb (1511)

Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519) made this sheet around 1511, near the end of his anatomical research, working partly from an earlier dissection of a pregnant cow — which is why the placenta is shown in multiple parts. In a note he reflected that the unborn child does not breathe because it rests in water and is nourished by the mother, and that one soul governs both bodies. By the end of his life he claimed to have carried out 30 human dissections. The drawing, in red chalk with pen and ink and measuring about 30.4 x 22 cm, passed to Francesco Melzi, then Pompeo Leoni and the Earl of Arundel, and has been in the Royal Collection since around 1690.
