About Leonardo da Vinci and The Head of St Bartholomew (1495)
Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519) made this work around 1495. The Last Supper, painted between about 1495 and 1498 in the refectory of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, is one of the most famous images in the world. Leonardo prepared the heads, gestures and draperies of the apostles in a series of powerful studies like this one. It is drawn in red chalk and measures about 19.3 x 14.8 cm. Like Leonardo's other drawings at Windsor, it passed after his death to his pupil Francesco Melzi, then to the sculptor Pompeo Leoni and to Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel, before entering the Royal Collection by around 1690.
