About Leonardo da Vinci and The Muscles of the Shoulder, Torso and Leg, and a Skirmish (1506)

Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519) made this work around 1506. Leonardo's anatomical drawings are among the greatest scientific illustrations ever made. He studied the human body first around 1489 in Milan and again intensively around 1508–1513, claiming by the end of his life to have performed some thirty human dissections, and he combined precise drawings with notes in his famous mirror-writing. It is drawn in red chalk and measures about 16.1 x 15.3 cm. Like Leonardo's other drawings at Windsor, it passed after his death to his pupil Francesco Melzi, then to the sculptor Pompeo Leoni and to Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel, before entering the Royal Collection by around 1690.
