About Michelangelo and Annunciation to the Virgin (1547)

Michelangelo (1475–1564) made this black chalk drawing around 1547–1550. In his last decades Michelangelo turned more and more to religious subjects, drawing the Crucifixion, the Annunciation and the Lamentation in soft chalk with searching, repeated lines that reflect his intense personal faith. This sheet is Michelangelo's design for an altarpiece commissioned around 1547 for the Cesi family chapel in the church of Santa Maria della Pace in Rome; its indented outlines show that it was traced onto another surface. It is drawn in black chalk and measures about 38.4 x 29.7 cm.
