About Michelangelo and Cleopatra (Verso) (1534)
Michelangelo (1475–1564) made this drawing around 1534. In 1532 Michelangelo met Tommaso de' Cavalieri, a young Roman nobleman, and gave him a series of highly finished drawings as gifts: mythological scenes such as the Rape of Ganymede, the Punishment of Tityus and the Fall of Phaethon, as well as ideal heads. Admired and copied at once, these presentation drawings spread across Europe through engravings. It is drawn on the back of the sheet that carries Michelangelo's celebrated Cleopatra, and shows the queen with a more anguished expression. It is in the Casa Buonarroti in Florence.
