About Michelangelo and Sonnet with Self-Portrait Painting the Sistine Ceiling (1509)

Michelangelo (1475–1564) wrote this sonnet around 1509–1512, while painting the Sistine Chapel ceiling, addressing it to his friend Giovanni da Pistoia. Far from heroic, he describes himself as aching and miserable, insisting that painting was not his true profession. Michelangelo was also one of the finest Italian poets of his age. He wrote some 300 sonnets, madrigals and other poems, many addressed to Tommaso de' Cavalieri and Vittoria Colonna, exploring love, beauty, faith and old age. It is in the Casa Buonarroti in Florence.
