About Michelangelo and Studies for the Tombs of the New Sacristy (1520)

Michelangelo (1475–1564) made this architectural drawing around 1520–1521. From 1520 Michelangelo designed the New Sacristy at San Lorenzo, a funerary chapel for the Medici family that combines architecture and sculpture in one great scheme. He carved the tombs of Lorenzo and Giuliano de' Medici with the reclining figures of Night, Day, Dawn and Dusk, but left the chapel unfinished when he moved to Rome in 1534. It is in the Casa Buonarroti in Florence.
