About Paul Cézanne and Jaguar, after Barye
Paul Cézanne (1839–1906) made this drawing after a sculpture by Antoine-Louis Barye. Cézanne drew constantly in pencil, filling sketchbooks with studies of his family, bathers and landscapes, and copying sculpture in the Louvre and the museum in Aix — especially works by Pierre Puget and the old masters — to understand how forms turn in space. It is drawn in pencil and measures about 12.5 x 21.8 cm. It is held in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
