About Paul Cézanne and The Road Bridge at L'Estaque (1879)
Paul Cézanne (1839–1906) painted this work in 1879, during his 'constructive' period. L'Estaque, a fishing village near Marseille, was one of Cézanne's favourite places from the 1870s. He painted its red roofs, chimneys and rocky hills above the deep blue Mediterranean, which he compared to a playing card for its strong, flat colours. It is painted in oil on canvas and measures about 56 x 65.5 cm. It is held in the Ateneum Art Museum in Helsinki.
