About Pierre-Auguste Renoir and The Umbrellas (1886)
Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841–1919) worked on The Umbrellas in two stages, from about 1881 to 1886. The soft, feathery figures on the right belong to his Impressionist style, while the crisp, firmly drawn figures on the left show the new, more linear manner he adopted in the mid-1880s, so the painting records a turning point in his career. Painted in oil on canvas and measuring about 180 x 115 cm, it is held in the National Gallery in London.
