About Quinten Massys and The Ugly Duchess (1513)

Quinten Massys (1466–1530) was a leading painter in Antwerp and a pioneer of secular, satirical art in Northern Europe. He painted An Old Woman around 1513 in oil on oak panel, about 64 x 45 cm. The face is closely related to grotesque head drawings by Leonardo da Vinci, showing the lively exchange of ideas between Italy and the North. Her features later inspired John Tenniel's illustration of the Duchess in Alice in Wonderland (1865). The painting belongs to the National Gallery in London.
