About Raphael and The Alba Madonna (1510)
Raphael (1483–1520) painted this work around 1510, soon after arriving in Rome. It takes its name from the Dukes of Alba in Spain, who owned it in the 18th century; it later belonged to the Hermitage in St Petersburg and was sold by the Soviet government to Andrew Mellon in 1931. Painted in oil on panel and transferred to canvas, it measures about 94.5 cm in diameter and is held in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
