About Rembrandt van Rijn and A Young Scholar and His Tutor (1629)

Rembrandt van Rijn (1606–1669) painted this work around 1629. Rembrandt was born in Leiden in 1606 and trained there and, briefly, in Amsterdam with the history painter Pieter Lastman. Back in Leiden in the late 1620s he worked side by side with his friend Jan Lievens, painting small, dramatically lit biblical scenes and tronies — studies of heads in costume — that soon caught the eye of Constantijn Huygens, secretary to the Prince of Orange. It is painted in oil on canvas and measures about 104.6 x 88.9 cm. It is held in the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles.
