About Rembrandt van Rijn and Belshazzar's Feast (1636)

Rembrandt van Rijn (1606–1669) painted this work around 1636–1638, in his early, ambitious years in Amsterdam. The story comes from the Book of Daniel: during a feast using sacred vessels taken from the Temple in Jerusalem, a hand appears and writes words foretelling the king's fall. Rembrandt arranged the Hebrew letters in vertical columns, probably on the advice of his neighbour, the scholar Menasseh ben Israel. Painted in oil on canvas and measuring about 167.6 x 209.2 cm, it is held in the National Gallery in London.
