About Rembrandt van Rijn and Self-Portrait as the Apostle Paul (1661)

Rembrandt van Rijn (1606–1669) painted this work in 1661, in the same years he painted a series of the apostles. The sword is Paul's traditional attribute, recalling his martyrdom. Painted in oil on canvas and measuring about 91 x 77 cm, it is held in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
