About Rembrandt van Rijn and The Monk in the Cornfield (1646)
Rembrandt van Rijn (1606–1669) made this etching around 1646. In the 1640s Rembrandt reached the height of his powers as an etcher. Alongside religious masterpieces such as the Hundred Guilder Print he etched the countryside around Amsterdam, portraits of friends and collectors, and scenes from everyday life, increasingly adding drypoint for rich, velvety shadows. This impression is held in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
