About Ugo da Carpi after Raphael and A Sibyl Reading (1518)
Ugo da Carpi (c. 1480–c. 1532) made this chiaroscuro woodcut around 1518 after a design by Raphael (1483–1520). Ugo da Carpi was one of the first Italian printmakers to make chiaroscuro woodcuts, printing several wooden blocks in different tones to imitate wash drawings. In 1516 he asked the Venetian government for a privilege to protect his invention, and many of his finest prints reproduce designs by Raphael. The print measures about 27.3 x 22.2 cm. This impression is held in The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
