About Ugo da Carpi after Raphael and The Descent from the Cross

Ugo da Carpi (c. 1480–c. 1532) made this chiaroscuro woodcut after a design by Raphael (1483–1520). Ugo da Carpi was one of the first Italian printmakers to make chiaroscuro woodcuts, printing several wooden blocks in different tones to imitate wash drawings. In 1516 he asked the Venetian government for a privilege to protect his invention, and many of his finest prints reproduce designs by Raphael. This impression is held in the Cleveland Museum of Art.
