About Vincent van Gogh and Orphan Man, Standing (1882)
Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) made this drawing in 1882. In The Hague, between 1881 and 1883, Van Gogh taught himself to draw by studying ordinary working people — orphans, labourers, fishermen and the poor — in pencil, chalk and watercolour, and received his first painting lessons from his cousin by marriage, Anton Mauve. It is executed in crayon and measures about 54.1 x 38.2 cm.
