About Vincent van Gogh and Smoked Herrings (1886)
Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) made this painting in 1886. From March 1886 to February 1888 Van Gogh lived with his brother Theo in Paris. There he met the Impressionists and younger artists such as Toulouse-Lautrec, Émile Bernard and Paul Signac, discovered Japanese prints, and transformed his dark Dutch palette into bright, broken colour. It is painted in oil. It is held in the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo, the Netherlands.
