About Vincent van Gogh and The Garden of the Asylum (1889)
Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) made this painting in December 1889. In May 1889 Van Gogh voluntarily entered the asylum of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. Despite periods of illness he painted around 150 canvases there — olive groves, cypresses, wheat fields, the asylum garden and colourful interpretations of works by Millet and other artists he admired. It is held in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
